The New Polestar 2 Review

If you’re thinking of switching to all-electric motoring and want punchy performance alongside sleek styling, the Polestar 2 could be for you.

This 100% electric fastback model is set to rival the Tesla Model 3 in more than looks and technology. As the brand is connected to Volvo, you can see evidence of its Scandinavian roots throughout the design. However, it brings a whole host of technology and features along for the ride – and looks good doing it.

Want to know more about the Polestar 2 and what it offers? Let’s delve into the details.

Exterior features

There’s no mistaking the Polestar 2’s external appeal. The design is minimalist yet bold, with striking lines and expressive headlights. At the back, its rear bar looks like something out of a sci-fi film, yet it presents an understated vibe and high-quality features in abundance.

Colour-wise, the description of the shades provide film-star quality such as Space, Thunder, Magnesium, Jupiter, Midnight and Snow – all with a high metallic finish. The wheels are also expertly machined with a variety of designs to choose from. Another cool feature is the frameless design of the door mirrors. This cuts the volume of the mirror by 30% and maximises your field of view.

Interior features

Inside the Polestar 2 is where you’ll see the resemblance of Volvo’s styling. However, you can also expect the same quality, which many say is a step above Tesla’s offerings.

The colour scheme is curated throughout, and the upholstery is designed with premium materials, including Nappa leather. You can also choose colours, including charcoal, ash and zinc embossed fabric.

Space is abundant in the Polestar 2, and there’s ample legroom for passengers in the back. Tall individuals may feel a bit snug due to its sloping roofline, but it’s a comfortable ride nonetheless.

You might be surprised by the space provided in the boot due to its hatchback/crossover design. There’s 425 litres to play with, just slightly less than the Model 3. However, still plenty for suitcases, shopping and so on.

Performance

Electric cars are renowned for their punchy performance, and the Polestar 2 is no exception. This model has the choice of four powertrain variants giving you standard and long-range capabilities. In the standard range option, you get around 268bhp. But the long-range model provides between 295 and 469bhp with impressive torque.

This car is also available in an all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive powertrain, and each system is designed to optimise driver engagement and performance.

Whether you’re looking for a comfortable commuter or a pop-to-the-shops type of car, the performance never falters. Its suspension handles a host of road conditions and is tuned in both standard and upgraded versions to provide comfort and safety. The adjustable steering feedback feature also tailors the ride to your driving preferences.

Electric economy

As this car is set to rival the likes of Tesla, one of its biggest selling points is the long-range credentials. At the top-spec long-range single motor variant, you can expect up to 406 miles range between charges. This falls to 321 miles for the standard range single motor, but it’s still pretty impressive despite the difference.

Another positive feature is you don’t have to wait ages for this model to charge either. If you’ve got a charging point at home, leave it overnight, and it’ll take between seven and eight hours to top up. Of course, taking it to a public fast-charging point will speed things up greatly. Here, you’ll get up to 80% charge in around half an hour. You could also use the car’s three-pin domestic plug in an emergency, but it’ll take about 40 hours to recharge.

Smart driver assistance technology

The Polestar 2, like other electric cars, shines when it comes to driver assistance systems and safety features. There are a staggering three radar units, 12 sensors and five cameras around the car monitoring the environment. Some of these sit in the Polestar’s SmartZone, located where the traditional grille would be.

You get systems such as blind spot monitoring, run-off road mitigation, parking sensors, cross-traffic alerts, plus much more. Adaptive cruise control also makes motorway driving effortless.

The car is designed to reduce the risk of significant injury to drivers and passengers in the event of a collision. The battery is also protected and automatically shuts off if an incident occurs. Of course, due to its extensive safety systems and features, the Polestar is rated five stars by Euro NCAP.

Infotainment

The Polestar 2 was the first car with an Android operating system built into the infotainment system. This intuitive feature provides secure internet access and a host of connectivity features.

The screen itself sits central and is a 12.3-inch digital display. It has two preconfigured modes, Calm and Navigation, to limit distraction for the driver. In addition, there’s a host of in-car apps, such as Spotify, YouTube Music and Google Maps. Apple CarPlay is also supported.

What’s the Polestar 2 like to drive?

The Polestar 2 brings a lot to the table, especially for those looking to transition to electric motoring. While it’s slightly more expensive than the Tesla 3, you get a range of stylistic extras and edgy road presence compared to the Tesla’s minimal aesthetic. In addition, this car offers a smooth, exciting and powerful ride, and what’s more, you can tailor your driving experience.

All in all, if you’re looking for a premium hatchback/crossover car, this is a top choice.
